A STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING

It is a bit intimidating to start a painting of sunflowers. How do I portray the burst of sunshine onto the canvas? How do I reflect the amazing symphony of yellows and greens’ dance on each petal? How do I translate the emotion of light and shadow, elegance, strength, and optimism? The emotion that the viewers would feel?

I set my easel up on our front steps, where remarkably tall self-seeded sunflowers welcomed to our home. As soon as I squeezed the gorgeously optimistic colors of yellows, orange, brilliant blues, and greens and landed the brush on the canvas…the magic swept me completely. Wholeheartedly. And I could not stop. After a brief tea break, I started another one. And then one more. The yellow finches were just as busy trying to make the best of nature’s abundance. It was such joyful fun to have their company!

Remarkably, I loved what I have created- a rare feeling an artist experiences observing the final results. The inner censor was speechless, thanks God! I think it is only because of the sunflowers, the powerful ode to nature’s golden splendor. And JOY.

I thought about the sunflowers during this magical process. People love them so much. For me, having lived in Siberia, I had to discover them, learning their personalities and characters. Why? Because it was only not long ago when my local friends brought me to experience fields of sunflowers going on and on to the horizon. All as one family. As one tribe. As one nation.

And now, stroke by stroke, I connected with them and understand all of you who love them so much.

They certainly bring a smile. And JOY. And warm memories of summer.
